Enchantment
Enchantment is a common magical skill used to create and enhance a variety of day-to-day tools. Often considered the “sister magic” to curses and blessings, enchantments are magic bound to a non-living physical object. This magic can have a variety of effects, though most enchanters focus on creating items that can help to improve everyday life.
Things such as fireproofing enchantments of safe-boxes for documents, kitchen knife blades that refuse to cut when they come in contact with living skin, and self-warming blankets are just some examples of common enchantments. There are also a lot of enchantments used to create disability aids; cups that make noise when full, chairs that shift to help the user stand, and floating bowls that refuse to be knocked over are a few well-known ones.
Despite their many uses, enchantments only have a limited energy within them that will eventually fade, making the enchantment wear off over time. Unless maintained and recharged by an enchanter, the magic will get weaker and weaker until it disappears completely and the item becomes non-magical again. Because of this, most enchanting services are relatively cheap, as they know they will have many return customers.
Enchantments also be used in all of the casting states:
• Passive enchantments are long-lasting spells that are always in effect. An example of a common passive enchantment could be a levitating plant pot that constantly floats in place.
• Active enchantments are spells upon an object that must be consciously activated and used. An example of an active enchantment is a mortar and pestle that, after being used for several minutes, will continue to grind ingredients on its own at whatever speed was used, until the pestle is removed from the mortar.
• Triggered enchantments are enchantments that don’t take effect until specific criteria is met such as physical contact, temperature, light levels, or location. An example of a triggered enchantment is a door lock that, when anything other than its own key is inserted into it, will make a loud alarming sound.
It must also be mentioned that there are some pedantic debates on whether plants are capable of being enchanted, as they are technically alive, or if magic laid on plants should be considered curses and blessings. Most people consider plants objects when placing enchantments.
