Spellcraft
Spellcraft is a term for the magic practised by non-specialised spell-casters. People who study and combine a more general knowledge-base of magic, rather than one or two specific schools of magic, are known as “witches,” “mages,” or “spellcrafters,” dependant on the localisation. Because this generalised usage of magic can often lead to over-exertion of magical abilities without the mastery of any particular skill, it is discouraged in most cultures to practise magic this way.
All spellcrafters have unique abilities and styles of their own, drawn from their personal knowledge-base of magics they have chosen to study and refine. They often combine the different magics they learn and so their magic can be rather volatile and unpredictable if misused. On top of this, many spellcrafters will choose to draw their magical energy from multiple sources, making it easy to accidentally overload themselves with power and have spells backfire.
To help avoid harm to their bodies while learning and practising their magics, they stabilise their magic with an item of focus; usually these items are a wand, staff, totem, or a piece of jewellery. These focuses aren’t needed for every spell and spellcrafters are capable of casting without them, but the nature of their magic can make it difficult to cast safely without lots of preparation, and by having a focus for any backfired spells to return to, the risk of physical harm is significantly lowered.
