Summoning

Summoning is the act of reaching out into the universe and pulling from it a desired element or object. There are several different techniques for summoning, used for different things.

The easiest form of summoning is bringing forth elements from the surrounding natural or magical environment. Drawing water from the air and cooling it to create ice, enhancing heat to make fire, or compressing pure energy into electric sparks are some of the most common examples of beginner-level summoning. Once a spell-caster has learnt how to pull from the world immediately around them, they can then move on to harder summoning, and reach out further for more solid objects.

A more advanced form of summoning uses teleportation, usually via rune-drawn portals, to pull objects, animals, or people through space to the new desired location. This form is best-done with the help of symbols, crystals, and focuses, as otherwise it becomes very limited by the spell-caster’s powers, and risks damaging or injuring the object or creature summoned. By using magic-boosting elements, it is also much easier to summon things over distances than it is without. This method of summoning can also be used to banish things; sending them a great distance away to be rid of them.

The most difficult form of summoning is only used by those who have mastered the skill, as to attempt it without a great amount of skill risks severe injury to oneself; true masters of summoning magic can create things to summon without needing to move already existing elements or objects through space. This process is completely exhausting and dangerous, as it draws an excessive amount of energy to do so. The easiest thing to create with this method are elements, such as water or metals, while recognisable objects are much more difficult and rarely look as they should; a chair created with summoning magic will, generally, look off in some way and appear to be not quite right. Nothing living has ever been successfully summoned this way.

While it used to be much more common a magic, its use has grown rarer over the years due to its public image suffering from the misuse of the magic in order to steal from people’s homes without entering them. There have also been several documented incidents of pickpockets using summoning magic to take people’s coin-purses from their pockets without having to approach them.
